What is tinnitus?

Do you suffer from ringing in ears?

Tinnitus (or ringing in ears) is a condition that affects 30% of the UK population at some point in their life. For most, this annoying sound simply goes away, but for 1:10, tinnitus can be extremely bothersome, disrupting sleep and general well-being.

Tinnitus has two primary components:-

  1. Spontaneous brain activity – electrical activity along the hearing pathway is interpreted by the brain as a sound.
  2. Perceptual component – our emotional response may give a perception that the tinnitus or ringing in ears gets louder in time.

Tinnitus has a physical element as well as our emotional response to the tinnitus sound.

Finding a solution

Is there a tinnitus cure?

There is no immediate medical solution that will resolve tinnitus symptoms overnight.

Tinnitus sounds are different for everyone and may include, ringing in ears, whooshing, whirring, buzzing, whistling, pulsatile etc. Some may have multi-tonal tinnitus and the sounds can be perceived in either ear or somewhere in the head.

There is lots of great help available from Plymouth Hearing & Tinnitus Centre to help you find relief. Whilst there is no tinnitus cure, we do not accept that ‘nothing can be done’ or that you  ‘simply have to live with it’.

Most tinnitus clients we see derive significant benefit over time. If you are looking for a tinnitus cure to relieve ringing in ears then we can provide you with current professional information to help you manage your symptoms over time.

See our appointment booking page or our contact page to book a detailed consultation.
